”our 2014 acre zinfandel is produced entirely from organically grown fruit harvested from the yount mill vineyards estate which straddles the oakville and yountville ava’s. This vintage we were able to take advantage of several rhone varietals that enhance the final blend. Two percent syrah from yountville and an eight percent grenache/cinsault field blend from oakville. The zinfandel from a single vineyard called lincoln creek is all oakville. Only about 10 acres in the entire oakville ava are planted to zinfandel making it rare indeed. But one cannot find a better place to grow zinfandel. Oakville’s proximity to the cooling marine influence provides zinfandel a long growing season allowing for full flavor development and ripeness at lower potential alcohol and wine redolent in red fruits fragrant and balanced. We have found that several rhone varietals are wonderfully commentary to zinfandel. Syrah in this case two percent from the blockhouse vineyard in yountville adds color and structure. Especially noteworthy for 2014 is the inclusion of an eight percent field blend of grenache and cinsault. We love the way these two soft and aromatic grapes add a spicy and floral bouquet. The grenache and cinsault are grown together in a small wedge shaped vineyard in oakville just north of the well regarded rock cairn vineyard. They are harvested and fermented together. Because a significant percentage of the juice is then drained off prior to fermentation to produce rose the final red wine offers even more concentration and intensity. Tasting notes the 2014 acre zinfandel is an attractive garnet in color. The integration of zinfandel with its supporting cast of rhone varietals delivers an aromatically satisfying interplay between ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit with deeper notes of sage licorice lavender and hits of tar. In the mouth it is silky and supple with a buoyant core that keeps the impression lively. The ripe red fruit and earthy and spicy flavors linger for a long satisfying finish. A versatile food wine it will pair with a wide range of dishes including grilled meats barbeque pork charcuterie and aged cheddar cheese.” – acre wines
