Chateau lafite rothschild’s second wine carruades de lafite presents similar characteristics to the grand vin but with its own personality linked to a higher proportion of merlot and to specific plots that are used to produce carruades. The name comes from the carruades plateau a group of plots acquired in 1845 just next to the vines on the chateau hilltop. The weather conditions for the 2011 vintage were unusual and required all of our technical teams’ vigilance and expertise. This was a very early vintage with an exceptionally hot spring low rainfall at the beginning of the year but then more in the summer and a persistent threat of powdery mildew (a vine disease that is usually quite rare in the bordeaux region). Finally just as we were getting ready to harvest a huge hail storm in the north of pauillac and saint estephe on 1 september obliged us to reorganize the picking schedule. The plots that had been affected had to be picked first; fortunately as a result of the conditions the grapes had ripened early and quality was not compromised. Tasting notes (at bottling): closed nose. Very flavourful palate fairly full-bodied with well-defined tannins. Notes of red fruit and tobacco. Aromas of coffee tobacco and spices. A long very well-rounded wine.” – carruades de lafite *90-93/100 wine spectator *92-94/100 wine enthusiast,,wine~french bordeaux red~france~~bordeaux~,2011,y,,n 730,000000271647,1chateau l’evangile pomerol merlot cabernet franc [france],750ml,42,173. 67,937. 83,6,,n,chateau l’evangile’s wines are described in an old edition of “grand vins de bordeaux” as “full-bodied and elegant with incomparable finesse”. 2011 was characterized by a very dry winter and start to the spring. Barely 150 mm of rain during the first five months of the year: a record! High temperatures in april may and june caused the vines to grow very quickly resulting in the first flowers appearing remarkably early at the beginning of may! A cooler july gave the vines a chance to rest a little before an exceptionally hot august (with an average temperature of 31°c for the month). The grapes were harvested two weeks earlier than usual and were of excellent quality with superb tannins. The merlot was rich and dense but the low rainfall during the summer seriously reduced yields. The cabernet grapes were small with thick skins but of very good quality. Tasting notes (at bottling) dense intense colour with hints of violet. Powerful lingering expressive very ripe concentrated nose with notes of morello cherries and blackcurrants. The attack is dense and concentrated with very ripe powerful tannins. The palate is mature rich and smooth with a silky finish that is highlighted by the very high quality tannins.” – chateau l’evangile *93-94/100 james suckling *92-94/100 neal martin the wine advocate
