The samuel’s garden collection of wines embodies the fabric of the barossa region with the gentle fingerprint of yalumba. Having intimate knowledge of our land we have trialled and successfully proven that many varieties make a natural home in the barossa. Yalumba the scribbler cabernet sauvignon shiraz 2014: yalumba has long had a mandate to craft exceptional quality wines that are accessible to wine lovers around the world. With this in mind we set out to create a young sibling for the signature. The scribbler is a youthful interpretation of our beloved signature showcasing the exceptional fruit found in the barossa. Vintage conditions: good winter and early spring rains throughout the barossa filled the soil profiles setting the vines up well for vintage. A windy spring led to uneven fruit set and conditions remained dry and warm throughout late spring and summer. On the 14th and 15th of february the season changed and approximately 100 mm of rain fell in just over 24 hours. This rainfall and the following cool weather caused ripening to slow down and the rest of vintage progressed at an almost leisurely pace. A moderate cropping vintage has produced wines with intense flavours combined with some of the best tannin and natural acids we have seen. Winemaking/viticulture: select parcels of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz were hand picked and crushed to our 8 tonne open top stainless steel fermenters. The balance were machine harvested and fermented in our larger static fermenters. Wild yeasts present on the grape skins were allowed to initiate fermentation with cultured winery yeasts added later to complete fermentation. Several ferment control options allow us to optimise each individual ferment to make a wine with excellent depth of colour richness texture and complexity. Tasting notes: deep red in colour the 2014 scribbler displays concentrated red to black fruits and the richness of oak maturation. There is a vibrancy in the dark fruits and a well rounded savouriness to the palate. The structure feels youthfully charming with the tannins holding the palate in tension. Drink now or cellar for the next 5-7 years. Enjoy with a mushroom and thyme risotto or moroccan lamb. Oak: matured for 13 months in 21% new french hungarian and american oak hogsheads and barriques with the balance in 1 to 5 year old french american and hungarian oak. – yalumba
