The vineyards: cecil de loach planted these delicate pinot noir vineyards in 1973 in the russian river valley. Located on the plains and gently rolling hills off olivet road in western santa rosa this area provides an excellent medium for the coastal fog that blankets our fruit in the mornings and evenings. The cooling moisture facilitates a longer growing season in which pinot noir thrives. The growing season: 2015 was an exceptionally good year for growing grapes in the russian river valley. Coming into the 4th year of drought we expected lower yields but the weather cooperated with a steady temperature and a punch of heat in the end causing the fruit to ripen slowly ensuring maximum flavor development. This was our earliest harvest to date. The winemaking: we use old world techniques whole berries and whole clusters to make our pinot noir in small batches that we punch-down up to three times a day. After native yeast fermentation the wine is aged in french oak barrels for

The pinot noir grapes from individual vineyard lots were gently hand harvested at night into small 30# picking boxes in order to bring the fruit into the winery intact and cold. They were then destemmed lightly crushed and cold-soaked in small fermentation tanks holding 3 to 10 tons each for two days to extract color and flavors. During fermentation the grape skins were punched down or wine was pumped over one to three times per day determined by taste to fine tune the extraction of the skins. When optimal extraction was achieved after 10 days the free run wine was promptly drained from the skins and seeds and transferred to barrels for aging. Only the free run wine was used in this blend. The wine rested in our barrel caves in french oak barrels (46% new) for 9 months before the wine was bottled in july of 2016. Tasting notes: the nose is greeted with intense blackberry and black cherry fruit with spice and a touch of toasty oak. The mouthfeel is big but silky and builds on the

Grower’s Guild Sharecropper Pinot Noir

''the story during the economic recession of 2001 and owen roe's first couple vintages as a winery washington growers were facing hardship in selling their fruit come harvest time. At owen roe we wanted to help our farming friends and prevent missing out on such well-tended beautiful fruit. We were presented with the difficult and costly purchasing of grapes to process cellar and bottle waiting several months to recover our costs on the finished wine. To overcome this obstacle we decided to bring back the historical business practice of sharecropping resulting in the aptly named wine sharecropper's. This partnership meant that owen roe would take the fruit make the wine and once it was sold share the profits with our growers. This remains an important part of our history and due to the success of this wine; we are now able to pay our growers upfront. Much to our surprise the vines responded well to the sunny winter and spring days and were very productive. Although it was a very dry year we saw brilliant sunshine through the growing season with early harvest dates. The 2014 vintage turned out to be great with good yields and intense flavors. After hand harvesting the grapes were fermented with native yeast in small open-top fermenters. After fourteen days the wines were pressed settled over night and then moved to calera's barrel cellar. Martinelli Pinot Noir Bella Vigne

Vineyard character: the russian river valley is among the world's most exceptional terroir & climate for pinot noir. Our estate-grown single vineyards are recognized for being uniquely expressive on their own. We have learned that when blended we can create a wine combining beautiful structure and ripeness. Bella vigna translates in italian to beautiful vines not only because of their location in the russian river valley but also for the wine they produce. Growing year: the growing year in 2014 was the third dry year in a row and was full of unforeseen challenges provided by mother nature. You would think the ongoing drought excessive heat from march thru june and hail in early april would have brought down the quality of this vintage. Thankfully this was not the case! Even though the harvest was very early the small berry sizes and healthy yields have produced very well balanced wines; they are not over-bearing in tannin or structure and are a pleasure to drink. People worked with what they had and good farmers instinctively knew the health of the soil was vital to quality crops. As the industrial revolution mechanized agriculture farming became more like mining. Nutrients were stripped from the ear

Steele Pinot Noir Carneros

We started making pinot noir from santa barbara to complement our tremendously popular carneros pinot noir. Where carneros pinot leans toward bright fresh raspberry and cherry notes santa barbara pinots are dark rich and complex with dried cherry herb sassafras and cola flavors. The two wines form a great partnership in showcasing the breadth of style in california pinot noir. Vineyards bien nacido a nine hundred acre vineyard in santa maria is well known for it's chardonnay and pinot noir plantings. For years steele has sourced pinot from this famous site for our vineyard designated block n' bottling. For the santa barbara label we pick from block f a younger-vine benchland site and blend it with grapes from the lower elevation goodchild vineyard. The interplay between the bien nacido's dijon clones and the goodchild's pommard make for a wine of great nuance and harmony. Winemaking we take a hands-off approach with our pinots beginning with rollers out at the crusher
