The wine is round and plush in the mouth deftly balancing engaging fleshiness with pitch perfect acidity and a broad full mouthfeel. Estate-grown grapes: individual blocks were harvested at night sorting out any clusters that might detract from the quality. The fruit was fully destemmed to achieve purity of character and was sorted using state-of-the-art optical machinery to remove any poorly colored or desiccated berries. Gravity-fed into our small open-top fermenters the cold fruit was allowed to macerate for several days releasing flavor compounds structural skin tannins and color. The winery was founded in the remote santa cruz mountains in the early 1960s and was one of the first of a new generation of wineries that would lead a modern resurgence of premium winemaking in the region. Founding the winery was a young dermatologist named david bruce. Although raised in a teetotaler family david discovered wine while a medical student through his interest in food and cooking. After completing his medical residency he purchased 40 acres of land above the fog line in the santa cruz mountains. He cleared the land himself and planted the vineyard by hand. At the time there were only one or two other working wineries in the region. During the first 25 years of the winery david divided his time maintaining a fulltime dermatology practice in los gatos and running the winery u

The vineyards: cecil de loach planted these delicate pinot noir vineyards in 1973 in the russian river valley. Located on the plains and gently rolling hills off olivet road in western santa rosa this area provides an excellent medium for the coastal fog that blankets our fruit in the mornings and evenings. The cooling moisture facilitates a longer growing season in which pinot noir thrives. The growing season: 2015 was an exceptionally good year for growing grapes in the russian river valley. Coming into the 4th year of drought we expected lower yields but the weather cooperated with a steady temperature and a punch of heat in the end causing the fruit to ripen slowly ensuring maximum flavor development. This was our earliest harvest to date. The winemaking: we use old world techniques whole berries and whole clusters to make our pinot noir in small batches that we punch-down up to three times a day. After native yeast fermentation the wine is aged in french oak barrels for

Windvane Estate Grown Pinot Noir

The pinot noir grapes from individual vineyard lots were gently hand harvested at night into small 30# picking boxes in order to bring the fruit into the winery intact and cold. They were then destemmed lightly crushed and cold-soaked in small fermentation tanks holding 3 to 10 tons each for two days to extract color and flavors. During fermentation the grape skins were punched down or wine was pumped over one to three times per day determined by taste to fine tune the extraction of the skins. When optimal extraction was achieved after 10 days the free run wine was promptly drained from the skins and seeds and transferred to barrels for aging. Only the free run wine was used in this blend. The wine rested in our barrel caves in french oak barrels (46% new) for 9 months before the wine was bottled in july of 2016. Tasting notes: the nose is greeted with intense blackberry and black cherry fruit with spice and a touch of toasty oak. The mouthfeel is big but silky and builds on the

This deeply hued wine has a beautiful balance between bright acidity and elegant tannins. Notes of pomegranate give way to bright flavors of bing cherry followed by a savory edge and slight spiciness. Look for a soft lingering earthy finish with hints of plum. Production notes: the fruit was de-stemmed only so that whole berries were transferred to open top fermenters to help capture bright fruit aromas and flavors. After 4-8 days of a cold soak the tanks were warmed which allowed the juice to ferment naturally. The tanks were punched down 2-3 times per day for 10 days allowing skin contact for color and flavor extraction. The wine was then drained off the skins and placed in 30% new french oak barrels.'' - jenner vineyards
