The growers bodegas roda was founded in 1987 by mario rotllant and carmen daurella catalan partners who met through their business affiliations in gourmet products and wine. Well aware of the significant number of excellent traditional wineries in rioja their objective was to create superb high-expression red wines in a modern style reflective of the region and the constituent varieties yet embodying something unique. Thesymbol of the thistle an elegant yet hardy flower closely tied to the landscape and capable of persisting long after being cut conveys a sense of their vision for the wines. The name roda is formed from the first letters of rotllant and daurella’s names. Their land spain rioja rioja was the first spanish wine regiontoobtain do status in1925. In 1991 it was promoted to doca (qualified designation of origin) a higher category reserved for wines maintaining a proven consistency and quality over a long period of time. Rioja has three distinct subregions (alavesa alta & baja) as well as stylistic diversity ranging from the traditional oxidative wines to the full throttle modern style. Initially roda’s founders idea was to buy a young single vineyard but this quickly gave way to the more practical solution of locating existing exceptional very old (30-100 years) vineyards. Theysecured contractual agreements for control over 28 different vineyards each with a distinct microclimate. Today they control the winegrowing of 370 acres of vineyard half of which are owned and half belonging to growers with whom roda has long-term agreements. The wine the reserva wines – roda & roda i – are differentiated by their fruit characteristics that are identified at harvest. Roda is marked by red fruits suitable for earlier enjoyments while roda i is characteristically deeper and darker with black fruit aromas and flavors. Malolactic fermentation in french oak followed by 16 months aging in french oak barrique (50% new) and 2 years in the bottle. – bodegas roda
