CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

As a tribute to our founders, we created the Spec’s Charitable Foundation, specifically for education purposes.

Spec’s is a founding sponsor of the University of Houston Hilton School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Once a year, a huge golf tournament is held with the Hilton School Wine and Spirits Institute as our beneficiary. We have been instrumental in many scholarships and even an endowed professorship in the Beverage Management program.

In our continued effort to support our employees and their families, Spec’s has partnered with the Catholic Diocese of Galveston and Houston to provide for the education of our employees’ children.

We are also proud to have a full scholarship to the University of North Texas. To date, we have had more than 100 students take part in our educational opportunities.

As a tribute to our second-generation owners and their love of music, Spec’s is also a lifetime underwriter of the famous One O’Clock Lab Band at UNT.

The Foundation’s largest fundraising event is Vintage Virtuoso, which benefits the Houston Symphony’s educational programs. Over the past 13 years, more than $2 million has been raised to bring music education to the children of Houston.

The Cork Project is a way to reduce items put into landfills and at the same time, donate money towards cancer research. To put it simply, our customers drink wine, return corks and we contribute to a charitable cause! Spec’s is working with Nomacorc, a cork recycling company, to collect corks that will be used for ‘up-sale’ items. To date, more than 300,000 corks have been recycled!

We are currently working with the Texas Children’s Cancer & Hematology Center  in Houston. Their mission is to provide personalized, high-quality, family-centered care to children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders; to discover and implement innovative laboratory research and treatment advances aimed at curing and preventing childhood cancer and blood disorders; and to provide world-class training and education for current and future leaders in the field. For more information, visit their site at txch.org.

Very few people have not been touched in some way by cancer, the Spec’s family included. Both our founders had cancer, and our namesake, Spec, died of pancreatic cancer.

Bring in your corks (natural or synthetic) to any Spec’s and we’ll do the rest. This is our small way to help save the earth and end cancer, one cork at a time!

Attention restaurants and clubs:

You can help, too! Whenever you serve wine, save those corks and on your next delivery from Spec’s, we will pick them up and recycle them for you. We can even partner with a recycle bin at your events! Call Jessica Toner for arrangements at (713)526-8787.

At Spec’s, it truly is our desire to remain in touch with our communities, and help as many organizations as possible. We want to work with groups that will make the most positive impact on those in our communities.
