The Flying Ace

This gin based cocktail takes inspiration from Tom Hardy’s character in Christopher Nolan’s WW2 drama Dunkirk. The stunning blue-sky color from the crème de violette gives off a retro vibe reminiscent of 1940’s aviation.

  • 1 1/2 ounces gin
  • 3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice (or Limoncello)
  • 1/4 ounce creme de violette
  • maraschino cherry for garnish (optional)

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add gin, maraschino liqueur, lemon juice and creme de violette. Shake until chilled.
  2. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a cherry. Serve and enjoy!

The Shape of Aqua

Inspired by Guillermo Del Toro’s latest modern fantasy drama, this vibrantly colored teal drink takes note from the New Orleans Hand Grenade, but adds a classy twist. Fusing together flavors of peach, citrus, smoky mezcal, and bitter cinnamon syrup—this cocktail is just as original as the film it takes its name from.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces mezcal
  • 1/2 ounce Vedrenne
  • ¼ ounce peach brandy
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice
  • 1/4 ounce bitter cinnamon syrup*
  • 1 orange wedge for garnish

*For the bitter cinnamon syrup:

  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 ounces gentian root
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. First make the Bitter Cinnamon Syrup. Break the four cinnamon sticks apart, then place the broken sticks into a pot and heat until you can smell them. Add four cups of granulated sugar, two cups of water and two ounces of gentian root to the pot. Heat until the sugar has dissolved at a low simmer.
  2. Remove from the heat and let cool. Strain and refrigerate. After your syrup has cooled, you’re ready to mix up a beautiful blue cocktail.
  3. Pour a quarter-ounce of the bitter simple syrup and the remaining ingredients (minus the garnish) into a cocktail tin and add ice.
  4. Shake the drink, then strain into a coupe (preferably chilled) and garnish with orange wedge.
