Happy National Vodka Day! We’ll take any excuse to celebrate this colorless and versatile libation. Did you know that vodka makes up nearly 25% of all spirits sold in North America? That makes it the most popular spirit sold, even surpassing America’s favorite, bourbon. But despite its popularity, vodka is also one of the most misunderstood drinks out there. So to celebrate National Vodka Day, let’s bust some of the top myths about this popular spirit.
1. Vodka is made from potatoes only.
Actually, vodka can be distilled from just about anything, including potatoes, grapes and milk. Most U.S. vodkas are made from corn, wheat or other grains.
2. More distillations means better vodka.
Not necessarily. The number of distillations depends on the ingredients and how the vodka is made. For example, vodka made from potatoes will be stripped of its flavor if overly distilled. On the other hand, vodka made from milk products should be distilled multiple times to ensure all hints of the milk products are gone.
3. Vodka is best served cold.
This is probably one of the most widespread myths about vodka. Drinking vodka straight out of the freezer actually numbs the mouth, eliminating its taste. While this can be good for lower quality vodkas, if you’re drinking premium vodka, it is best at room temperature to fully appreciate its flavor.
4. Vodka has no flavor.
While it is true that vodka holds flavors well and is great for cocktails, premium-vodkas actually have a very distinct taste. Some have full-bodied and complex flavors, while others are lighter and sweeter.
5. Higher price means better vodka.
The price tag on a bottle of vodka is often a pretty poor indicator of how good the spirit tastes, so don’t always immediately jump for the most expensive bottle. In fact, Spec’s has a number of great vodkas for under $20!
