Ole! Celebrate National Margarita Day

Start slicing the limes and salting your glasses, because Sunday is National Margarita Day! With 185,000 of these tart, icy favorites being consumed every hour in the U.S., it’s no wonder this cocktail has a day dedicated to its refreshing taste.

The origin of the margarita has multiple versions. Carlos “Danny” Herrera claims to have created it at his Tijuana-area restaurant around 1938. And Margarita Sames, a Dallas socialite says she made the drink at her Acapulco vacation home in 1948. Either way, let’s celebrate the invention of this popular drink.

Rita on the Rocks

1 ½ oz tequila
1 ½ oz triple sec
1 to ¼ oz lime juice
Salt to rim glass

Shake all ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker until the exterior is frosted. Strain into a glass over rocks, or straight up in a cocktail glass. Use slice of lime as a garnish.

Spicy Margarita

½ cup silver tequila
¼ cup orange liqueur
¼ cup lime juice
¼ cup simple syrup
4 cucumber slices
Jalapeño, halved
Salt to rim glass

Mix tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, simple syrup, cucumber slices and jalapeno halves in a large pitcher. Serve over ice in a salt-rimmed glass.
