Every year, wine lovers line up on the third Thursday of November for the official release of the year’s Beaujolais Nouveau. So what exactly is Beaujolais Nouveau and why all the hype?
Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine made from the Gamay grape in the Beaujolais region, located in the southern most part of Burgundy, France. Unlike many wines, it is released at the same time every year, in the same year of its harvest. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the Nouveau was bottled and sold outside of France, and it quickly gained popularity.
What makes this wine so unique is how quickly it is produced after harvest. The difference? The juice ferments inside the grape’s skin before the grapes are crushed, resulting in a wine that is fresh, fruity and low in tannins.
The 2013 release of the Beaujolais Nouveau is just in time for Thanksgiving. It is light and fresh to pair with the turkey, yet still versatile enough to complement your family’s famous side dishes. Try serving it chilled, between 54-58 degrees, instead of at room temperature.
