Although Cognac is often thought of as a cold weather drink, National Cognac Day is celebrated on June 4th!
Cognac is a brandy, which means it is distilled from wine, 90% of which is ugni blanc. To legally qualify as Cognac, the drink must be distilled two times in copper pot stills, aged for at least two years in French oak barrels, and it must come from the geographic region near the Charente River.
There are three official quality grades of Cognac:
- V.S. “Very Special” or “Very Superior” designates a blend in which the youngest brandy has been stored at least two years in a cask.
- V.S.O.P. “Very Superior Old Pale” designates a blend in which the youngest brandy is stored for at least four years in a cask.
- X.O. “Extra Old” designates a blend in which the youngest brandy is stored for at least six years, but on average it is stored upwards of 20 years.
Cognac is often enjoyed straight, though it can also be enjoyed in a cocktail! Try this Cognac-Rita for a spin on one of our favorite classics.
