History On The Rocks: National Whiskey Sour Day

Tomorrow is National Whiskey Sour Day! If you’re going to be in the Houston area TODAY, hop by our downtown Superstore from 2-5pm to celebrate by trying out some new recipes!

For more than 100 years, the Whisky Sour was the most popular cocktail in the U.S. In fact, it made its first published debut in the 1862 cocktail book “The Bon Vivant’s Companion or How to Mix Drinks.” It’s easy to understand why. The drink has great flavor, a lovely bouquet and looks mighty attractive.

This classic cocktail is a snap to make. It is simply whisky (bourbon, preferably) combined with lemon juice and sugar, shaken together with ice. You can include a bit of egg white in the drink if you want — it creates an attractive frothy, foamy head on the drink.

Ingredients
2 oz whiskey
2/3 oz lemon juice
1 tsp superfine sugar
Maraschino cherries for garnish
Optional egg white

Preparation
Shake the bourbon, juice and sugar in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into a chilled glass. Decorate with maraschino cherry to add a pop of color.

If you’re adding the optional egg white, simply add it to the mix before adding ice and shake for 20 seconds. Then, add the ice and shake again for 20 seconds.

Enjoy!
