Cold nights are becoming more frequent and our warmer days are behind us. If you’re like us, your go-to drinks are changing along with the winter weather. To battle the cold fronts, we’ve put together a list of great wine choices that will keep you feeling warm as the temperature drops.
Ruby Style Port: This rich and full-bodied wine is higher in alcohol content and is sure to warm you up. With intense berry fruit flavors and a touch of spice with warming notes, it is perfect for a chilly night. Try Cockburn’s Ruby Port ($13.59) or Die Krans Ruby Port ($14.99).
Tawny Port: A slightly less powerful choice than the Ruby Port, the Tawny Port is spicy and nutty with hints of smoked wood aromas. These bold and comforting flavors capture the season perfectly. Give Dow’s Fine Tawny Port ($13.99) or Fonseca Tawny Port ($13.39) a try.
Full-bodied Reds: If you’re looking for something a little less strong than a port, try a Bordeaux-style blend or a robust cabernet or merlot. Pair these wines with a spread of cheese or chocolate to soften their tannins. The Eberle Cabernet/Syrah (21.99 w/key) or the Bliss Cabernet ($10.99) are both great choices!
Rich Chardonnay: Not in the mood for red? Some whites such as a rich chardonnay are great for cooler nights. With clean and sweet spices and hints of oak, chardonnay will pair perfectly with a hardy apple dessert. Try Franciscan Chardonnay Oakville ($11.69) to prepare you for the season.
