Olé! It’s National Sangria Day!

Sangria isn’t just for the summertime. In Spain, this classic cocktail is enjoyed year-round, especially today — National Sangria Day! Not to mention, Sangria’s ruby red color and fresh, fruity taste makes it perfect to serve at any holiday party. Spec’s carries a variety of savory Sangrias, or you can customize your own recipe!

What is Sangria? It is a refreshing and sweet variation of wine that combines it with chopped fruit, sweeteners and a small amount of brandy.

Nearly 2,000 years ago after the Romans conquered Spain, they began planting vineyards along the peninsula. With very little safe drinking water in Spain, wine quickly became the most popular alternative. Over the years, various fruits and sweeteners have been added, and eventually Sangria was born.

Although the name Sangria comes from the Spanish word for blood – sangre – that doesn’t mean you have to make it with red wine. White, rosé and sparkling wines are just as popular and delicious.

Classic Sangria:
2 bottles chilled dry red wine
1 cup brandy
1 cup orange juice
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 oranges, cut into thin rounds
2 lemons, cut into thin rounds
3 key limes, cut into thin rounds
2 apples, cored and cut into chunks
2 cups club soda

Combine wine, brandy, orange juice and sugar in a large bowl and stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the sliced fruits and refrigerate for at least an hour. When you are ready to serve, add the club soda and enjoy!
